Application of an Uncoupled ALE-formulation to Confined Granular Flow in Silos

The paper describes results of FE-simulations of confined granular flow in silos with and without inserts. The numerical analysis was performed with the help of an uncoupled Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach. The behaviour of the granular material was described with a non-local hypoplastic model. The FEresults of silo flow were compared with experiments in a large-scale silo. Both the experiments and numerical calculations show a significant influence of the insert on the flow pattern and wall pressures distributions.
